Let’s not make these deals
The business side of writing can be just as hard, if not harder, than the craft itself.
After all, as Jeff Somers points out in a Writer’s Digest article, it’s harder to sum up a financial strategy in a catchy phrase like “show, don’t tell.”
(Though we do think “don’t work for exposure — people die from exposure” has a great ring to it!)
And it’s easy to feel like someone else holds all the power.
But, Somers says, that’s wrong. Without a writer, what would a publisher, well, publish?
So just because someone offers a contract or gig doesn’t mean you should automatically jump at it.
Somers lists thirteen situations in which you should most definitely NOT jump, over at Writer’s Digest.
