Let your characters tell the backstory

May 21, 2019 by Jeffrey Bruner

Do you trust your reader?

That may seem like a silly question, but C.S. Lakin believes it’s at the root at some pacing problems in writing.

In particular, she notices that some authors load too much backstory into the beginning of a story and do so in an overwhelming, unnatural way.

Lakin shows how to use dialogue to tell backstory and suggests how to sprinkle it throughout the story as well in a recent blog post on Live Write Thrive.
